Tanning hides the old way
Michael works full time as a traditional hide tanner out of his homestead in southwest New Mexico.
For the last ten years he has had his hands on deer and elk skins almost every single day. Cracking skulls for brains, scraping, stretching, working, and smoking hides under the cottonwood trees of his river bottom home.
Michael tans about 200 hides a year and provides buckskin to many of the professional bead workers and quill artists in the western U.S as well as artists doing museum re-creation pieces.
He does white ceremony hides with ears and tail upon request.
You may occasionally see clothing pieces listed that are sewn by his wife, Kelsi.
Many of Michael’s customers have said that he tans the highest quality traditional buckskin hides available.
