This two year old bull elk was harvested in southern NM. We tanned it out the old school way with brain matter, wood smoke, and elbow grease. Smoked with cedar and cottonwood.
Nice, large, square-shaped hide with minimal holes — just a few small holes along the edges. Lots of material here for crafting. Passes a size ten beading needle test.
I personally think brain tanned elk is not ideal for water drum rounds as it doesn’t have the durability of deer despite the thickness, but some may disagree.
This would be an excellent and ideal hide for crafting. Over 15 square feet of total material.
